Abstract

Focusing on the paper-money episode in the first Act of Part II, the following analysis will briefly consider the conflicting relation between seeming (Schein) and essential being (Sein), between fiction and truth, as it is represented in Goethe’s Faust. It will then focus more elaborately on Goethe’s late thinking from which transpires a painful awareness of an epochal turning point far removed from the premises, on which the worldview of the Goethezeit was based.
