Abstract

The article highlights the pivotal role played by N. Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter in the definition of the mutual influences between Law and Theology. The controversial relationship between moral order and juridical constraints is perceived and analyzed within the proper structure of American tradition. The narrativization of the contentious struggle among competing domains is transformed in an emblematic canon of representation.
