In the particular universe of the fairy tale difference proves to be an asset. An integral part of the rational world, it can nevertheless disturb, but, ultimately, participates in the diversity of the real world. The reason for difference in the tales of Andersen is further highlighted, thanks to his extraordinary romantic heroes. Besides the fantastic or singular figures, such as mermaids, fairies, princesses, queens ..., evolve ordinary beings, but who are put to the test of difference – children, soldiers, ..., as well as characters from the animal or vegetable reign – ducks, swans, toads, firs, oaks, roses ... or even unusual objects, animated by the author’s pen – toys, teapots, needles... The theme of difference is closely linked to the search for identity (tales "The Ugly Duckling," "Thumbelina" ...). The identity of the characters is equally marked by the famous division between the finite / infinite and the mortal / immortal, which, in turn, structure the Andersen's text with strong Christianity accents (tales "The Little Mermaid" "The Snow Queen"…). The variations of difference in Andersen's tales cover a wide diapason. Definitive or temporary, real or imaginary, difference attests thereby the idea of diversity and the evolution of identity.
