Abstract

The paper explores the influence of Joseph von Eichendorff on Wolfgang Hilbig’s Die Kunde von den Bäumen. While Hilbig’s ties to Romanticism are well-known, Eichendorff’s impact has been less examined. The study focuses on two key points: first, the similarities between the main characters in Hilbig’s story and Eichendorff’s Aus dem Leben eines Taugenichts, and second, how Hilbig adapts Eichendorff’s style of describing nature to create mood and atmosphere. By reworking these elements, Hilbig offers a complex take on the Romantic tradition and turns it to a tool to critically reflect on his present.
