Abstract

This article aims to trace, through the analysis of Il Doge (1967) and Stefanino (1969), an evolutionary trajectory of Palazzeschi’s late œuvre, concerning the themes that most distinctly define his literary and (anti)ideological identity. The purpose is to highlight the persistence of modernist themes in his narrative and to capture its dynamic and diachronic development within the broader context of twentieth-century Italian literature, along with the intricate intersections that both separate and connect Modernism to the avant-garde, and Neo-modernism to neo-avant-garde. In order to picture Palazzeschi’s novels within this frame, the theme of the Absence in Il Doge (relating it with the modernist sentiment of disbelief toward the stability and coherence of life) and the theme of Otherness in Stefanino (in terms of variety of forms and structures within European relativist thought) will be analyzed.
