Abstract

This essay examines the flourishing of the photo-text in West Germany between the 1960s and the 1970s, interpreting it as a crucial stage in the Nachholbedarf—the need to catch up—with the experience of European modernism. Through the study of Rolf Dieter Brinkmann and Alexander Kluge, the article investigates how the integration of photography did not amount to a passive revival of modernist models, but rather to their dialectical reworking, aimed at overcoming the crisis of the programmatic realism that had dominated West German literature in the early postwar period.
