Il proconsolato di Cicerone in Cilicia

The article details Cicero's proconsular year in Cilicia (51 BC). In such a critical period for Rome, he accepted the post reluctantly, actually wishing to remain in the capital to witness and participate in the political struggles between Caesar and Pompey, fearing to be excluded from Roman civic life. Cicero had the intention of governing Cilicia with summa modestia and summa abstinentia (Att. 5, 9, 1); but, upon his arrival, he was first forced to repair the damage caused by his predecessor Appius Clodius Pulcher. He also attempted to gain military glory, but with little success. Finally, he maintained close correspondence with family and friends, often expressing to his loved ones his impatience to return to Rome.
