Abstract

The paper aims to determine Cicero's legitimacy as a source of information on the law of his time, after establishing that he was not a jurist (according to Cicero's own statements).

Cicero is usually not held in high regard by law scholars; firstly, because the environment in which he worked is quite distant from that of classical jurists, but even more so because law was for him a mere means to win his cases, thus he would expound the laws in the way that was most favourable to his clients. However, in exercising his profession as a lawyer, he always stayed within the limits of the law in force, demonstrating adequate knowledge of it.

The author concludes that Cicero can be considered a reliable source, although he does not fit the definition of a jurist.
