The first Spanish editions of Cicero’s Pro Milone (Valencia, 1546 and 1549)

Abstract

 In 1546 and 1549, the first two Hispanic editions of the Latin text of the Pro Milone were published in Valencia, within the humanistic context of the lectures on rhetoric and oratory delivered at the city's Estudi General. These two editions, of considerable patrimonial value since only a single copy of each survives, bear witness to a period of effervescent recovery of Cicero's rhetorical and forensic œuvre in Valencia, which materialized in the publication of seven further works of the Arpinate within a short span of time. The aim of this study is the material and textual analysis of both editions, with attention to those involved in their production, to their material features, to the textual form they transmit, and to the surviving copies that have come down to us, with a view to establishing their links with the earlier European printed tradition and to elucidating the spheres of circulation that both editions have had up to the present day.
