Abstract

The article offers an overview of the main themes and scholarly problems related to the small group of letters exchanged with Brutus in the final year of Cicero’s life. It highlights Cicero’s appeals for Brutus to return from the East in support of the republic, his disappointment with the young Octavian, and the complex relationship between Brutus and Cicero. It also addresses long-debated critical issues, including the original number of letters, their chronological arrangement, the relationship between the two independently transmitted books, and the still unresolved question of their authenticity.
