4. Interêt immédiat et vanité. Vers un individualisme responsable et organisateur
Main Article Content
Abstract

Immediate Interest and Vanity. Towards a Responsible and Organizing Individualism
Every author has a global vision of society, that necessarily conditions their analysis. Jean-Baptiste Say is no exception to the rule. His vision of the world, that he defended until the end of his life, was formalized in Olbie or Essay on the means of reforming the morals of a nation. It concerns the creation of a more just society which will provide for the spiritual and material needs of its members. For J.-B. Say, the motives for men's actions are vanity and immediate interest. In order to overcome the contradiction between the preservation of individual freedom and the destructive effects of this freedom, men must be brought to enlightened interest. The way to do this is through education. The Treatise on Political Economy, then, comes across as the first book of ethics for a people living in a Republic.
