Sandy Cardinali

Abstract

This paper considers three puzzling textual problems in Sophocles’ fr. 659 R.2. The fragment consists of ten corrupt iambic trimeters preserved by Aelian (On the characteristics of animals 11, 18) who ascribes them to a Sophoclean Tyro. I will specifically focus on σπασθεῖσα at line 5, αὐγασθεισ’ ὑπό at line 6 and διατετιλμένης φόβης at line 7. Indeed, although they are transmitted by the whole manuscript tradition, the three lectiones have been questioned by modern scholars. Through a thorough lexical, syntactic and exegetical analysis I will propose possible solutions to this much discussed philological problem.
