The Challenge of the Subject in the Face of the Real

Abstract

In one of her recent interviews, Catherine Malabou pointed out a problem which I deem to be pivotal in considering the question of the real with all its implications: speculative realists are indifferent to the subject. In this paper, I will present my position that in contemporary philosophy it is precisely the problem of the subject that becomes an actual challenge when raising the question “What kind of reality are we talking about?”; “What is real?” In light of treating the problem of the subject as a theoretical challenge in regard to the question of reality, two positions, that of Catherine Malabou (The New Wounded, Before Tomorrow) and Giorgio Agamben (Infanzia e storia), will be analysed and attempted to be compared. I will endeavour to discuss the problem how is the notion of the subject, the question of its identities, its transformations, being human-non-human, correlated to the question of reality.

Rita Šerpytytė è Professoressa Ordinaria di filosofia e diretrice del Dipartimento di filosofia continentale e studi religiosi presso l'Università di Vilnius (Lituania). La sua ricerca coinvolge la filosofia di Heidegger, la filosofia di Hegel, la filosofia postmoderna, la filosofia italiana contemporanea (in particolare Gianni Vattimo, Giorgio Agamben e altri), il realismo speculativo e i nuovi realismi e il problema del nichilismo e della negatività nella filosofia occidentale. È stata Visiting fellow presso il Dipartimento di Filosofia dell'Università di Roma “La Sapienza” (Italia) nel 1993 e nel 1996; Visiting Researcher presso il Centro per le Scienze Religiose di Trento (Italia) nel 2004; e Visiting professor presso l'Università di Torino (Italia) nel 2020. Ha tenuto conferenze in varie università in Italia, Spagna, Portogallo, Belgio, Austria, Stati Uniti, ed è stata relatore invitata a conferenze internazionali in varie università in Italia, Spagna, Francia e Germania. Alcune sue monografie selezionate in lituano includono Nichilismo e Filosofia del Occidente (2007); Secolarizzazione e cultura del presente (a cura di)(2013); Trasformazioni della Ontologia: Media, Nichilismo, Etica (2015; co-ed. con D. Bacevičiūtė e Tomas Sodeika); e Spettri della realtà: nichilismo occidentale tra diagnosi e teoria (2019). La professoressa Rita Šerpytytė ha ricevuto nel 2022 il Premio scientifico lituano (uno dei più importanti premi scientifici annuali nei campi delle scienze umane e sociali in Lituania).
